You have heard about them - some call it wind damage, some call them “straight line” winds and others simply call them summer storms. In Minnesota, we are in the storm season and the local TV station even tells us to “Stay Sky Aware”.
Can winds really cause damage? According to the National Severe Storms website, Damage from severe thunderstorm winds account for half of all severe reports in the lower 48 states and is more common than damage from tornadoes. Wind speeds can reach up to 100 mph and can produce a damage path extending for hundreds of miles. Severe and damaging wind is very difficult to forecast because they can be produced by any type of thunderstorm - even one that is dying. Meteorologists look for signals in Doppler radar scans of mid and upper-levels of storms, signals in the environment surrounding the storms, and the behavior of storms.
If the forecast is for strong winds, you should stay inside. After the storm, you want to inspect your siding, yard and roof. If you have had strong storms go through your neighborhood, call us. With strong winds, they can often lift up your roof shingles. So, while they may not look displaced from the ground, many times we find they have moved or the wind has taken one or two off of your roof.
